Unusually among the famous castles of North Wales Criccieth Castle was built to a large extent by the Welsh. Llywelyn Fawr founded the castle and it was extended by Llywelyn the Last. Later following his successful campaign against the Welsh in 1283 the castle was strengthened and extended by the English invader Edward 1.
