click here to buy image This Ocean Quahog, a Clam or Arctica islandica bivalve mollusc, was one of the World's Oldest Creatures. It was found at Red Wharf Bay on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales. It measures 106mm at its widest point, and the closed shell is 60mm wide at its fattest point. I have not yet counted the rings to determine its exact age. However, I have been advised by the Bangor University scientists, who discovered Ming the Icelandic clam, and estimated at 507 years)that this size of clam, found in the warmer waters of North Wales would probably have lived for a few hundred years. |Please don't be concerned ..the quahog, or clam, was already dead when I found the shell on the wide open sands of Red Wharf Bay.
