The old High Cross in Denbigh sits at the side of the road in Vale Street. Previously sited in Crown Square the lower part of the shaft dates from the 15th Century, and the upper part that replaced a cross head, is dated 1760. This cross was used as a hiring cross and as a focal point for markets and fairs. From 1821 butcher's stalls were attached to it and evidence of knife sharpening may be seen on the shaft.
