Today there are few remains of Degannwy Castle visible on the two rock outcrops known as the Vardre on the hill above Deganwy. For some reason this gatepost has survived and the slot for the drawbar still visible. The gate post would have formed part of the defences forming the lower bailey. Although the hill was occupied as early as the 5th or 6th centuries the remains of the gate probably date from later constuctions of the 13th Century under Henry 111 of England.
